This work belongs to a set of compositions of chamber music based on Invisible cities, the book by Italo Calvino. The aspects that these works have in common are the relationship between imagined architectures and the dynamics of cities, between compact forms and mobility.
Chloe is a great city, writes Calvino: “Something runs among them, an exchange of glances like lines that connect one figure with another and draw arrows, stars, triangles...”.
The work is written in a single movement, but it is divided into four sections, each related to an idea suggested by the text. It begins with a firm, rhythmic Toccata, then a rhythm almost like a waltz suggests the characters coming onto the stage and the slow tempo is linked to the far-off sound of bells; then comes the danze. The characters pass, change, are transformed, all as if in a circus arena from a Fellini film.
