The Suite pour piano (1928-1930) is the composition of greatest importance of Xavier Gols. Although the work was not finished until 1930, he began the process two years prior, while he was studying piano and held a job as a musical critic for the newspaper La Nau. Despite the numeric order that can be found within the collection, the prelude was the last piece he composed after having destroyed the first, which he confirmed was not to his liking.
The successive movements which compose the Suite are dedicated to his teachers Baltasar Samper and Blanca Selva; to his pupil, who died prematurely, Carme Ricomà; to the married couple Francis and Marie Forgas, intimate friends of Xavier Gols and keen music fans, who always encouraged his musical activities, and to the disciple pianist Enric Granados, Frank Marshall.
The Suite was first premiered on 25th June 1930 in the Sala Mozart in Barcelona in a piano recital by its very own composer, just before his return and final settling in his home town, where he would begin a new stage in his creative evolution aimed at the achievement of a more personal and mature style.
