The rougher harmony contrasts with beautiful melodies inspired by or taken from a traditional repertoire. This traditional root has its origins in his task of searching for songs, which he was commissioned to do for the Popular Collection of Catalan Verse.
Ametllers florits, al lluny (Almond Trees in Blossom, in the Distance) displays an initial harmonization and subsequent development of the song La Comtessa, the literary original of which was reproduced by Gols in the epigraph to the piece. La tarda als cims (An Afternoon at the Heights) freely recreates the song L'àngel de la guarda and the theme of El llogarret en festa (The village's Festivity) is based on Els dos brillaires.
