The Tema amb variacions per piano op. 70 dates back to 1970 and is dedicated to the composer’s daughter, the pianist Isabel Fleta. This is a piece that was originally written for the guitar (Clivis, 1971) and which later formed part of the author’s first symphony, which featured a piano concertante. The track is original and features five bars. The composer’s challenge was to create the variations from such a reduced subject material. Fleta has been successful and has written more than 40 variations on the proposed piece. We published the original version for guitar in Clivis in 1971, in 2006 we presented the first version for piano (piece and four variations) and now, after revising and adding to what the author wrote, we are publishing the complete edition: the piece and 37 variations. Fleta has organised the work in 10 issues, each one containing the piece and some of the variations (between 3 and 6). There are virtuoso, introspective, passionate, ethereal, vertical (with a display of chords) and horizontal pieces (with dialogues between the two hands), amongst others. A piece with great scope where Fleta shows that he is also a master in the art of variation.
