Agustí Borgunyó’s work in the United States as an arranger and director of studio and radio orchestras obliged him to compose mainly for large orchestras, but that did not stop him also composing chamber music and even a large number of works for the cobla (Catalan instrumental group). The Idil·li per a trio (violin, cello and piano) is a short work of less than six minutes and yet it is full of intensity, lyricism and expressive power. A solo cello introduces the work and a violin solo closes it, but the bulk of this piece is based on the sound of the three instruments in a perfectly balanced role. The markedly vertical score requires meticulous chamber work to achieve the same rhythmic intent in all three players. The work of the violin —almost always in an acute register— defines the tension and intensity of a piece which, according to the score, was composed by Washington in 1924.
