In String Quartet No. 2 the composer experiments with the technique of applying sculpture to music. At the same time he incorporates improvisations with the sole purpose of letting out his feelings and constructing emotional structures, and it is then that the notes cease to have any real importance in themselves.
Pere Soto first submerged himself into quartets by Bartok and Shostakovitx in order to identify some common essence. Although he used Logic audio tools to create his quartet, he then went on to make a series of changes to the point where the piece comes to acquire great musical meaning and the end result is perceived as a creation born entirely of human inspiration.
The piece was selected alongside works by two Italian composers, and was debuted in Mexico City in 2000 by the City of Mexico Quartet as part of the Cuerdas y Alma (Strings and Soul) cycle. In September of the same year, it was recorded live at the Teatre Zorrilla in Badalona as part of the same group’s European tour.
