In 1892 he presented it again in another competition, altering the title to Lo Cant de la Montanya [The Song of the Mountain] and making changes in the subtitles of the parts. He was awarded a prize of a thousand pesetas and Antoni Nicolau, a member of the jury, congratulated the composer on the winning work.
The influence of French symphonic forms on the piece is obvious, in its descriptive character; at the same time, folk elements are used as thematic material, constituting a first sign of conscious musical nationalism.
The work was first published in Barcelona in 1893 by Joan Baptista Pujol. This edition has been prepared from the copy of the version presented for the Societat Catalana de Concerts prize in 1892 now held in the Biblioteca de Catalunya. This version was probably used for the concerts given in Barcelona and Madrid soon after the prize was awarded. The manuscript, made by a copyist, has been compared with the piano reduction made by the composer himself.
