Flamenco Overture

DE326

Composed in 1962, the Flamenco Overture is one of the orchestral works that Benejam wrote once he had settled in Birmingham (Alabama), and reflects the Hispanic character of other works that he also composed during those years such as Baile (Spanish Dance), the Iberian Preludes and Lorqueña.

Flamenco Overture is a work for a large orchestra and has a marked Andalusian feel, with a beginning that recalls the ultra-famous Malagueña for guitar by Castellón native Francisco Tárrega, and is full of the melismas and rhythms typical of the genre; far from falling into an easy cliché, Benejam extracts from the orchestra a play of timbres and harmonies full of refinement, exploiting to the utmost the typical rhythm of flamenco dance to create a brilliant and spectacular work.
