Ricard Lamote de Grignon began his musical training as a cellist and was thoroughly familiar with the instruments of the string family, so composing for the viola came quite naturally to him. When he and his father were driven from Catalonia by the Franco regime and forced to move to Valencia, they had to compose some short pieces of this kind for the auditions to select musicians for the orchestra that was being started at that time.
This Scherzino for viola and piano is designed to demonstrate all the possibilities of the instrument and the player, in terms of both expressiveness and technical skill.
It is a work that has remained in his catalogue as a little jewel, a product of his melodic inspiration and profound musical understanding.
