Oriental - Petita cançó (Oriental - Short song) are two miniatures for violin and piano which radiate the Noucentista feel typical of Joaquim Salvat’s music. Oriental is a lyrical piece in which the violin takes a soaring melody, with the melismatic and intervallic turns characteristic of the oriental music signalled in the title. The middle section is more rhythmic while the ending calls once again on the highest tessitura of the violin. Petita cançó is more intimate in nature and is composed on the basis of a melodic and rhythmical cell played by the violin during the first two bars. The repetitions of this small motif and the slight variations it undergoes throughout drive this short, delicate and good-natured piece forward.
