Capricho núm. 3 (1985)

The initial cell of the descending arpeggio gives unity to the work that, despite its briefness, clearly shows the personality of Fleta Polo’s language and his deep knowledge of the different instruments he writes for.

Francisco Fleta Polo’s extensive production of chamber music includes a number of different works entitled Capricho. All of these works share a common denominator as they are written from up to down, as they naturally emerged, with the sole aim of expressing the author’s wish to make music for the instrumental combination that was available and, above all, give satisfaction to the musicians the works are dedicated to.
This Capricho no. 3 is a piece from the 1980s for a string trio. It was originally written for the three low instruments of the family (viola, violoncello and double bass) and later two further versions were made, one for violin, viola and violoncello and another for wind instruments (flute, clarinet and bassoon). As the author said, these later versions required much more work than the original as, rather than a process of reinstrumentation, it involved very complete adaptations with an extremely precise and idiomatic treatment of the instruments, relying on his own resources and not on the original strategies used in the works.
The initial cell of the descending arpeggio gives unity to the work that, despite its briefness, clearly shows the personality of Fleta Polo’s language and his deep knowledge of the different instruments he writes for.
